This week Indian Country’s voices were heard loud and clear! Thank you to everyone who organized and participated in One Billion Rising events on V-Day. It is now time to harness all of that energy and channel it into getting VAWA passed in the House - and it’s time to be very specific about which VAWA Native women deserve.

After yesterday’s final Senate vote, Indian Country is fired up and our Native men are rising! Renowned musician/singer Jeff Pehrson is making his voice heard in our fight for the Violence Against Women Act S.47. Jeff is a member of the band Furthur, and has his own two music projects The Fall Risk and Box Set.
"Dear Congress, pass the VAWA with all tribal provisions. Untie our hands and help stop the violence. Save Wįyąbi Project”

Senate takes a final vote today to reauthorize the Violence Against Women. We encourage you to contact your Senators, Representatives, and tribal leaders and tell them no amendments, no Issa/Cole, and no conceding to GOP demands. Native American women deserve S.47 and nothing less.
Save Wįyąbi Project has also created a guide to help you better understand the “Inherent vs. Delegated Authority” argument: https://www.facebook.com/notes/save-w%C4%AFy%C4%85bi-project/s47-tribal-provisions-a-breakdown/444881022247527

Huge News: Occupy Wall St. has officially joined the fight for Native women’s rights. We are so appreciative of them not only sharing the work of Save Wįyąbi Project, but of struggle to get the tribal provisions in the Violence Against Women Act passed.
In other news, the National Congress of American Indians has been working behind the scenes and conceding to Republican demands in VAWA. The lunatic fringe GOP is trying to remove the provisions in the Violence Against Women Act that would allow tribal authorities to prosecute non-Native rapists and domestic abusers.
So please ignore the the most recent statements made by the National Congress of American Indians regarding the Violence Against Women Act. They are still pandering to the GOP, their most recent press release is to save face. NCAI accomplished zero of their legislative goals last term, and are now trying to act like the voice of Native people in the VAWA fight [Spoiler: NCAI “State of Indian Nations” address is on 2/14 and they need something to present].
Keep going strong, and let your voice be heard - do not let anyone speak on your behalf. Senate votes again this Monday (2/11) so make sure you contact your Senators and tribal leaders and tell them Native American women need S.47 with NO amendments.

Vegas (4th grade) is a proud High Honor Roll member in his school district, and he attended today’s Idle No More round dance at the Missoula mall. He decided that he was going to bring a sign that was supportive of the Violence Against Women Act - and he came up with this message all by himself. Thank you to his mother for raising such an amazing young man, and for sharing this story/photo with us.

Last night we hosted a solidarity round dance for Idle No More and the Violence Against Women Act, at the University of Montana. One of our attendees created this beautiful video.

In addition, there is a new blog post today from Native Appropriations about our culture of violence, and the connection between the two movements. http://nativeappropriations.blogspot.com/2012/12/we-live-in-culture-of-violence-and-it.html
