Breaking News: VAWA To Be Challenged In Court

Tomorrow President Obama will hold a Violence Against Women Act singing ceremony with women’s organizations, law enforcement officials, tribal leaders, survivors, advocates and members of Congress. The bill has not yet been signed in to law, but as we have been documenting, there is already much effort to overturn the tribal provisions. 

Yesterday in D.C. an attorney from the United States Attorney General office confirmed that they are preparing to defend the tribal provisions in VAWA in federal court.

Cher Horowitz answers the immigration question better than Obama and Romney.

But some people came that like did not R.S.V.P. I was like totally buggin’. I had to haul ass to the kitchen, redistribute the food, and squish in extra place settings. The United Nations Declaration on Rights of Indigenous People.  Although not official international law, it carries moral and political force. It is a statement and agreement recognizing and empowering Indigenous people. It is also a commitment from the state, to address concerns specific to Indigenous people. Out of 158 countries, the United States was dead last to sign and refused to until 2010; President Obama adopted the Declaration at the White House Tribal Nations Conference.  Today, the U.S. is not living up to even the bare minimum requirements of the U.N. Today, Oglala Lakotas protested trucks carrying the Keystone XL Pipeline through the Pine Ride Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Many were arrested, but they were ultimately successful at stopping the drivers. As a Nakoda living in Montana I have to say Aho and Wopina to the protesters who showed so much bravery and honor today. Those are some fierce Natives defending their; defending our land.
