Today’s Save Wįyąbi Project
final Domestic Violence Awareness Month message from Jade Willoughby
: No more ascribing titles to people who have been hurt. Everyone gets to decide how they want to identify, and identifying as a “victim” of violence is not a bad thing, or means that the pers…on is worth less than someone who identifies as “survivor”. Because within the victim/survivor binary we’re ascribing worth to someone who is a survivor, and not a victim. People who have experienced violence get to identify as who they really are (and how they’re really feeling), and not who they’re *supposed* to be.
There’s also an idea that you go from victim to survivor and once you’ve reached survivorhood (idealized status) you’re no longer hurt and immune from ever hurting again. It’s OK to feel emotional, sad, angry, and upset. It’s also to feel empowered, strong, and on a healing path.
